The Council for Children’s Rights serves children in crisis in the areas of mental health, special education, juvenile justice, and child welfare. Specifically, the Council is court-appointed to serve children on the following types of cases: as the public defender for all children in Mecklenburg County aged 6-18 who are alleged to be delinquent, for children who have been committed to a psychiatric hospital or treatment facility due to mental health issues; as the best interest attorney for children in custody cases; and for children with disabilities in need of special education representation.
